II. INSTALLATION/PATCHES

Q: I'm having problems installing Chessmaster 10th Edition.
A: Try the following:
  • Close all open programs before installing.
  • Disable any anti-virus/firewall software that is running.
  • If you have Windows Vista/Windows 7, make sure that you install as the Administrator.
  • When installing, make sure you select to install DirectX (for Windows 10, this is not necessary).

Q: What patches are available for Chessmaster 10th Edition?
A: Please see the Chessmaster 10th Edition Downloads.
Q: Why would I want to install the patches?
A: These patches fix some of the problems and add new features, including the ability to use the software without a CD. Alsom they are required for playing online!
Q: How do I know if I have US or UK version of the game?
A: Download the US patch. If you can install it, you have the US version. If you can't, you have UK version. It works other way around too. Only the right patch will install.
NOTE: Just because you live in the US, don't assume you have the US version! The reverse applies if you live in the UK too, but we haven't had nearly so many problems with them.
Q: I get an error when trying to install either one of the two patches.
A: There are four reasons why this might happen:
1. You don't have the original game.exe in your folder (no-CD crack).
2. You have messed around with the CMdefault.ini file.
3. You already have 1.03 patch installed.
4. ?
Solutions:
Solution for 1, 2: Copy the original files from your CD.
Solution for 3: There's no need to do anything
Solution for 4: You figure it out and let me know.
Q: I'm running Windows Vista and the patch doesn't seem to install properly, although it says 'Installation successful'. How do I install the patch under Windows Vista?
A: When running the patch file, run the patch as Administrator (right-click on the patch file and select this option).

III. ONLINE PLAY
NOTE: Online Play for Chessmaster has been discontinued. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Q: Is it possible to play online with people who have other versions of Chessmaster?
A: No. Due to the use of different protocols, you can only play against others who are using Chessmaster 10th Edition.
Q: I have problems connecting to online play. What should I do?
A: Make sure you have the 1.03 patch installed and that you have all the needed ports opened. Read this.
Q: I have the latest patch installed and I opened the required ports, but still can't connect!
A: If you are using McAfee Firewall then this is the problem. You will have to uninstall it if you want to play online. Just disabling it won't work! Now it's up to you to decide if you want to uninstall it or not.
Also, Logitech Webcam causes your computer to freeze when trying to connect online. Read this on how to solve the problem.
If you are not using any of those then only God knows what's wrong.
IV. GAME QUESTIONS / ISSUES

Q: What music is played during the intro movie?
A: It is reported, but not confirmed, that is is a compilation of (at least) three pieces by J.S. Bach:
  • Gigue from the Cello Suite No.2 in d, BWV 1008.
  • Fugue from the Violin Sonata No.1 in g, BWV 1001 (performed here on the cello).
  • Prelude from the Cello Suite No.1 in G, BWV 1007.

Q: Whose voices are used in Chessmaster?
A: The voice used for Chessmaster (annotation, analysis, and moves) belongs to Denny Delk. The voice for illegal move commentary is Jeanne Reynolds. Their voices have been featured in Chessmaster for several years.. since Chessmaster 6000.
Q: Game.exe always uses 100% CPU, even when I'm just at the Main Menu. Is this normal?
A: Don't worry about it, that's perfectly normal, though admittedly, it does seem a bit excessive.
Q: Why does TheKing.exe keep running after I close the program?
A: No one knows. There's no known solution to this problem. You'll have to close the process manually if it's eating up too much processor power.
Q: How can I resize the boards in Chessmaster 10th edition?
A: Click on the board and turn the wheel on your mouse or press Page Up/Down buttons on your keyboard. For older Chessmaster versions, you can only resize True3D boards by clicking on the board and turning the mouse wheel or pressing Page Up/Down buttons on your keyboard. There is no way to prevent resizing of the chessboard.

A: Yes, there is. Read this.

A: Follow these instructions.

A: It's not mentioned in the documentation, but bump mapping only works with certain chess sets (such as the Lewis set).
Q: The avatars disappeared. What happened?
A: You need to make the Game Status window wider.

VI. TUTORIAL ISSUES
Q: I found an alternate solution to the Monster Knight Problem on page 37 of the Master Quiz 'Honing Your Skills.'
A: Yes, there are two solutions to this problem, the given one being:
1. Nxe2 2. Nxd4 3. Nxf3 4. Nxh4 5. NxG2 6. Nxe3 7. Nxd5 8. Nxb4 9. Nxa2 10. Nxc3 11. Nxb4 12. Nxa7 13. Nxc6 14. Nxd8 15. Nxb7 16. Nxa5 and the alternate solution being:
1. Nxe2 2. Nxc3 3. Nxa2 4. Nxb4 5. Nxd5 6. Nxe3 7. Nxg2 8. Nxh4 9. Nxf3 10. Nxd4 11. Nxb5 12. Nxa7 13. Nxc6 14. Nxd8 15. Nxb7 16. Nxa5
And yes, the alternate solution could be seen as 'better' because it captures pieces in order of relative value, so congratulations to you if you found it.
